HH Haruna Iddrisu has been a member of the Ghanaian Parliament since 2005. He is a lawyer and politician. He is an excellent speaker and is respected by many for his eloquence, logic and consistency. Mr. Idris is also known for his simple, yet elegant and practical way of resolving complex situations.

He is an expert in the field of law and has extensive experience in public policy.

 

Hon. Mr Haruna Iddrisu holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Ghana, Legon and is a qualified barrister from the Ghana Law School. He has been a member of the Ghana Bar Association since 2002.

 

He won the December 2004 general election and has been a Member of Parliament representing the good people of Tamale South in the Northern Region since 2005.

 

Senator Haruna Iddrisu was the Minority Leader in Parliament from January 2017 to January 2023. During the same period, he also served as a member of the Parliamentary Services Committee. From 2021 to 2023, he served as Chair of the Committee on Administration and Personnel of the Parliamentary Services Committee.

 

He was a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) from 2017 to 2020 and was Co-Rapporteur of the IPU Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, Finance and Trade. In 2011, he also served as a member of the ITU/WHO Committee on Information and Accountability on Women’s and Children’s Health.

 

The Hon. Mr Haruna Idris has held senior government positions including Minister of Communications from 2009 to January 2013, Minister of Trade and Industry from February 2013 to July 2014, and Minister of Employment and Labour from July 2014 to January 2017. He previously served as Chairman of the Free Zones Commission and the Brand Ghana Council. In 1996, Senator Haruna Idris ran for and was elected President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS). He is regarded as one of the most successful student leaders and is highly regarded for his steady and dynamic leadership during his tenure as Rector of NUGS.

 

As Minister of Communications, he pushed for increased competition in Ghana’s telecommunications industry through the introduction of number portability, SIM card registration and a data protection law to protect privacy.

As Minister of Employment and Industrial Relations, Minister Haruna Idris chaired the Technical Cooperation for the 323rd Session of the Governing Body of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Geneva, Switzerland in March 2015 and led delegations to the 2015 and 2016 International Labour Conferences.

 

Senator Haruna Idris is a sports enthusiast and enjoys playing football with his Tamale constituents on weekends.
