DiCaprio’s breakthrough came in 1992, when he beat out 400 other applicants to star opposite Robert De Niro in the film That Boy (1993). DiCaprio received rave reviews and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his realistic portrayal of a mentally disabled teenager in his next film, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993).
